Every Name a Story
On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Master Thomas Dunlop McCall, serving on S.S. City of Cairo (Liverpool) with the Merchant Navy who died 14/11/1942.
The Berwickshire News and General Advertiser 15/12/1942 reports:-
TWEEDMOUTH CAPTAIN MISSING
On his way home leave after two and half years, Capt. T. D. McCall, Osborne Road Tweedmouth, was a passenger on board a ship which has been lost by enemy action.
Mrs McCall, wife Capt. McCall, informed the ‘’Journal” on Tuesday, ‘that she has had word that up till then her husband’s name had not appeared on the lists of survivors but that she hoped for better news any time.
Capt. McCall with the Cable and Wireless Company and it 2½ years since he was last home. He has served with this Company since serving his apprenticeship during the last war.
He recently met his son Tommy, who is serving with the Royal Artillery overseas and it is thought that they would meet just shortly before Capt. McCall sailed. His daughter, May is at Darlington Training College for Teachers.
