H.M.S. “Penarth”
4th February 1919 age 23

Thomas Appleby Lee was the son of  Jonathan and Jane Lee, of 204, Station Road, Wallsend on Tyne

The Blaydon Courier 15/02/1919 carried a death notice:
Lee: – Stoker T.A. Lee, lost on H.M.S. Penarth, Feb. 4th, aged 23 years, son of Jonathan and Jane Lee of Allendale, late of Ryton.

HMS “Penarth” was a paddle steamer mine sweeper. On 4th February 1919 the vessel drifted into an uncleared minefield during a snowstorm and was destroyed. 37 of the crew survived and 40 lost their lives.

Thomas Appleby Lee is remembered at Allendale on A6.02 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
