On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Mess Room Boy Thomas McAthey, serving on S.S. Gwynwood (London) with the Merchant Navy, who died 04/02/1941.

The son of Thomas and Caroline McAthey and the nephew of Mary Oxley, of Boldon Colliery, Co. Durham.

He is listed in the Scout Roll of Honour 1939-45 as having been a member of 7th South Shields (Queen Street Methodist) Sea Scout Group.

Thomas McAthey is remembered at Westoe in W101.08 page 51 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
