Thomas J.T. Jobling drowned on 21st September 1918 in East Dock, Cardiff whilst on active service as 3rd Engineer on S.S. Sheaf Don.  He has no known grave.

Thomas Joseph Thubron Jobling was born on 11th September 1893 in West Auckland, and was baptised at St. Helen Auckland two months later.  His parents were James and Sarah Mary (nee Thubron) who had married in April 1874 in St. Helen Auckland.  He had seven sisters, Minnie (b.1875), Blanche (b.1880), Margaret Celia (b.1882), Sarah (b.1885), Olive Lucy (b.1886), Elizabeth Mary (b.1891) and Christina (b.1899) and one brother, George (b.1897).

In 1891, the family lived at Charlotte Terrace where James worked as a colliery engine master fitter.    By 1901, they lived at Front Street, West Auckland and father James was away at sea as a marine engineer and ten years later only Thomas, Celia and Elizabeth still lived with their mother.  21 year old Thomas was employed as an engineer, fitter & turner.

Aged 29, Thomas, 3rd engineer on the “Sheaf Don” was found drowned in East Dock, Cardiff on 20th/21st September 1918. The Coroner recorded an open verdict of accidental drowning whilst returning to duty at the docks.
