Every Name a Story

Captain Thomas Hindess was serving on the SS. Motor which sank off Redcar in January 1915

The Shields Daily News 18/01/1915 reports
Tyne Steamer Lost
Crew Feared Perished
Shields Men on Board
The small coasting steamer Motor, of North Shields, when entering the Tees 10.46 a.m. on Saturday, foundered. All hands are reported lost. Four lifebuoys and boat marked “Motor, North Shields” have been washed up at Redcar, together with some wreckage. The vessel lies between the bar buoy and No. 1 chequered buoy, on the south side of the Tees entrance.—Lloyd’s telegram.

The Motor, which was built at Jarrow in 1907, was owned by the Jarrow Tug and Lighter Company, Ltd., Grant Street, Jarrow. Her tonnage was 312.

A Redcar correspondent says:—The lifeboat Fifia and Charles was taken out and dragged a distance of nearly two miles by the West Riding Territorials, who are stationed in the town, in the hope that the crew might be of some service to four men who were reported have escaped from the unfortunate steamer on a raft. But, despite the closest watch, no signs of any men in distress could be observed, and the boat did not put out to sea. Soldiers on defence duty at the breakwater observed the Motor in difficulties against the very heavy seas which were running, and after it had been enveloped by one large wave it gradually disappeared before the observation boat on duty at the mouth the river could give any help. A considerable quantity of wreckage was washed by the tide on Saturday afternoon, including three lifebuoys, but no trace of the crew, which from the south gare breakwater, seemed to number about half-a-dozen, was discovered Saturday night, and is feared that all them have perished.

LIST THE CREW.
The owners, the Jarrow Tug and Lighter Company, up to yesterday evening, had no confirmation of the report, but they had no doubt as to the loss the vessel.
The Motor was engaged in carrying ore from Port Mulgrave, on the Yorkshire coast, to Palmer’s Works, Jarrow. She left Jarrow about 8 p.m. on Friday, and sailed from Port Mulgrave on Saturday morning about 5 o’clock. In the ordinary course of events the Tyne should have been reached about 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The crew was as follows;
Captain Hindess, 58 Cardonell Street, North Shields.
Ernest E. Cooper, 67 James Street, Jarrow, mate.
O. H. Danielson, 68 Taylor Street, South Shields, engineer.
A. Gillespie, address not known, fireman.
C. Sorensen, 65 Western Road, Jarrow, seaman.
W. Nesbit, 37 Potter Street, Jarrow, seaman.

There is no CWGC entry for  Captain Hindess.
