On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of K/13468 Stoker First Class Sydney Pace Mortimer, serving on H.M. Submarine E49 with the Royal Navy who died 12/03/1917.

This gentleman was the brother of my Mother, Mabel Pace Sutherland, nee Mortimer. My Mum was born in 1909 and died in August, 1993, by which time she had left Newcastle and moved with my Dad to live with my husband and myself in Durham City. She remembered that on the day her family heard of her brother’s death, she and her sisters were brought into the house and their pretty hair ribbons were replaced by black ribbons. They were then returned to the ‘Back Lane’ to resume their skipping game – such was life in the First World War! Mum was the second youngest of 9 children and remained proud of her brave brother all of her life. I thought you might enjoy this poignant anecdote – I will never forget it.

Sydney Pace Mortimer is remembered at Benwell on B86.02, on B86.19 (as serving on H.M.S. Dreadnought) and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
