In Newcastle upon Tyne (St. Anthony) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave of P/JX 149859 Able Seaman Samuel Humphrey Cooper, serving on H.M.S. Berwick with the Royal Navy, who died 09/03/1943.

The son of Samuel Thomas Cooper and Gladys Cooper, of Newcastle upon Tyne.

Samuel was born in 1920. In 1939 the family were living at 56 Monkchester Road,  father Samuel born 1893 was a Bricklayer’s labourer, mother Gladys had been born in 1897, sister Rose born June 19th 1923 was a Press Operator (Tin Box), brother Cecil born August 23rd 1925 was at school.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 11/03/1943 reports:-
COOPER, 56, Monkchester Road, 9th 23, Samuel H. Royal Navy, son Samuel and Gladys. Interment St Anthony’s. Sat., leaving 3. Friends and neighbours invited.

Samuel Humphrey Cooper is remembered at Walker on W2.19 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
