The Shields Daily News  09/08/1940 reports:-
NORTH SHIELDS JAP KILLED BY NAZIS
When a cargo vessel was attacked by Nazi bombers while in convoy off the South East Coast early yesterday a Japanese member of the crew Satoro Yamawaki. aged 45, of Gardner Street, North Shields. was hilted by machine-gun fire. His body was later landed at a South Coast port.
This is the fourth local Japanese seaman to be killed within a week through enemy action. The others were: T. Tuchiya (45). S. Yamasota (67) and a man named Matsue aged 45, of 73 Seymour Street, North Shields.
All unmarried, these three men had lived in North Shields for the past 23 years having served in British vessels during the last war.
Tuchiya and Matsue were firemen and Yamasato was a steward.
