On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Able Seaman Septimus Sloane, serving on S.S. Phare (London) with the Mercantile Marine, who died 31/10/1917.

The son of Margaret Sloane, of 5, Beacon Street, South Shields, and the late Ralph Sloane.

In St. Stephen’s and St. Aidan’s Churchyard is a family headstone for Sloane which reads:

“S.S. Phare” of 1,282 tons was carrying gas coal from the Tyne to London when she was hit by a torpedo from U-Boat UB-35, commanded by Oberleutnant zur See Karl Stter, off Scarborough. 14 of her 18 crew died.
