In Lemington Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Able Seaman Stanley Bird, serving with the Royal Navy who died 07/05/1919.

The headstone reads:

In
loving memory
of
Stanley Bird A.B.
who died on board
H.M.S. Lord Nelson
May 7th 1919 in his 19th year.
Erected by the Officers and men of
H.M.S. Lord Nelson

Also Joseph Bird his father
who died May 15th 1916 in his 50th year.

Stanley was born in Lemington on 11th October 1900 to Joseph Bird, a bricklayer and his wife Elizabeth.  In 1901 he was living with his parents, two older sisters and his maternal grandmother at 10, Hulne Terrace, Lemington.

In 1911 the family were living at 25, Tyne View, Lemington and Joseph was now a builder.

Stanley enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 23rd August 1915 and was described as being 5ft 5in tall with brown hair, grey eyes and a fresh complexion. He signed up for 12 years mans service on 11th October 1918 and was posted to HMS Lord Nelson.

Stanley was promoted to Able Seaman on 6th December 1918 but he unfortunately died on board HMS Lord Nelson on 7th May 1919 (No details).  His next of kin was his widowed mother, Elizabeth living at 52, Rokeby Street, Lemington.
