On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Junior Engineer Officer Raymond Jenness Carr, serving on M.V. Hopecastle (Newcastle upon Tyne) with the Merchant Navy who died 30/10/1942.

The son of William Henry and Sarah Jane Carr, of Ashington, Northumberland.

Colin Boyd adds that at the time of his death, Raymond Carr’s home address was 4 Welbeck Terrace, Ashington, and his next of kin was his mother Sarah. He was born on 26th January 1921 in Hexham. He was serving on the M.V. Hopecastle, he was posted as ‘missing presumed drowned’ when the rescue ship s/s “Tasmania” was sunk by enemy action 30/10/1942. He had obviously survived the earlier sinking of “Hopecastle”.
