In Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France is the Commonwealth War Grave of 61796 Robert Henry Turnbull serving with the 15th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery who died 25/04/1916.

He was the son of the late Cuthbert and Katherine Turnbull, of Amble; and husband of Jane Turnbull, of 29, Gordon St., Amble, Northumberland. They married about 1908.  Their son Cuthbert was born May 12th 1910 and daughter Isabella Mills was born November 12th 1911.  Three brothers died in the war, 2 in France, 1 in the Navy School.

Robert Henry Turnbull was born about 1886, at Alnmouth, Northumberland, the oldest son of Cuthbert and Catherine Turnbull.

There were five siblings:  Thomas A. (b. about 1888; at Alnmouth; a Miner); Jane R. (b. about 1893; at Amble); Norman (b. 16 January 1898; at Amble; a Miner); James (b. 24 August 1900; at Amble); and Kate (b. about 1908; at Amble).

He pre-enlistment occupation was as a coal trimmer working on vessels in Warkworth Harbour.

He died of wounds.  He was of three sons lost:  James Turnbull died 10 February 1918 and Norman Turnbull  died 18 July 1916.

Probate was granted at Newcastle upon Tyne on 4 December 1916 to Jane for ‘Effects’ valued at £173 11s 5d.
