In Silksworth (St. Matthew) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave, with a private headstone, of J/62603 Able Seaman Robert William Foster serving on H.M.S. Tempest with the Royal Navy who died 03/07/1918.

He was the son of Peter and Ellen Foster, of 8, Somerset Cottages, New Silksworth

The headstone, in the form of a cross on a plinth, reads:

In sweet remembrance of
Robert William
beloved son of Peter & Ellen Foster
died July 3rd 1918,
aged 20 years & 8 months.
A.B. of H.M.S. Tempest   T.B.D.

Robert William Foster is remembered at Silksworth on S111.01 and S111.02, at Sunderland in S140.48 Part 8 page 157 , and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
