Every Name a Story
In Harton Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Master Robert Robinson, M.B.E., serving on S.S. Empire Lough (West Hartlepool) with the Merchant Navy, who died 24/06/1944.
He was the son of William Robinson and of Jane Robinson (nee McMillan), of South Shields and the husband of Hilda Mary Robinson, of South Shields.
S.S. Empire Lough was a steamship of 2,824 tons, intercepted on 24 June 1944 by German E-boats in the English Channel and set on fire. It beached near Folkestone but was a total loss.
