Reginald John L’Ecuyer King was one of 11 children of whom only 7 survived. His parents were the Reverend John King, born November 24th 1842, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland and his wife Louise Maude Sadgrove, born in Levisham, Kent in 1862. Louise was the daughter of Frederick Sadgrove, a surveyor and secretary to a Building Society in Worthing, Kent and his wife Eleonie. The Sadgrove and King families were already related through marriage as living in the Sadgrove household at 1, Liverpool Street. Worthing in 1881 was a grandchild Helena M. King, aged 4-years.

The Reverend King and Louise Maude Sadgrove were married in 1882 in the district of Thanet, Kent migrating soon after to Crook, County Durham where John took up a position as clerk in Holy Orders and settled at The Vicarage. 

Their daughter Monica was born in 1883, Frederic William 1885, Maude Sadgrove 1887 and Reginald John L’Ecuyer King, January 13th 1889. Humphrey Stuart King was born October 4th 1892 at The Vicarage, as were his sisters Isabel Elizabeth in 1897 and Millicent Louise 1899.

By 1901 the King family had transferred to The Rectory, St. Catherine’s Parish, Crook. The Reverend King was listed in the census of that year as a clergyman (Church of England). Sadly before the birth of their youngest known child Helena in 1906 their son Frederic William died in 1903 aged 17-years.

Only 5 of their children were still living at home in 1911, Maude (23) and Reginald (22), who was following in his father’s footsteps was a theological student at Hatfield College, Durham, where he obtained an M. A., Isabel (15) and Millicent (11) were scholars, Helena (4) was not yet old enough to attend school. The family employed a single domestic servant to assist in the household. Their eldest daughter Monica (27) was employed as an assistant school mistress in the market town of Newbury, Berkshire, Humphrey Stuart (18) was a boarder at Darlington Grammar School known as Philip Wood Grammar School, the name of the headmaster and later graduated from Hatfield College, Durham with a B.A., in June 1914 as a Divinity Student.

When Britain declared a state of war existed with Germany, August 4th 1914, all regiments were ordered to raise new battalions in answer to Kitchener’s call to arms. Humphrey Stuart King enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne in September 1914 and died in the service of his Country in 1918. Reginald John L’Ecuyer King had taken Holy Orders, however he served during WW1 as Lance-Corporal, Inns of Court School of Law Officers’ Training Corps, 1918-June 1919,

The Inns of Court Reserve Corps was formed in 1914 and in 1917 the Cadet Battalion, Inns of Court to train young boys below enlistment age. The Officer Training Corps grew in numbers after the declaration of war in 1914. Such were the numbers of men who volunteered that the Corps premises in London was overwhelmed. A training camp was organised under canvas at Birkhamstead Common in Hertfordshire where it remained until June 1919.

During Reverend Reginald King’s service his father the Reverend John King died in 1917. 

Post war Reginald married in 1921 in the district of Stockton, County Durham Dorothy E. Hodgson who was born in Norton, Stockton on Tees, County Durham, July 26th 1894. Dorothy was the daughter of Robert Tyson Hodgson an independent assistant stock and share broker and his wife Flos Edith Kitching.

Reginald and Dorothy had 4 children, Elizabeth Mary, May 23rd 1923 and John Sadgrove L’Ecuyer, October 5th 1924 born in the district of Middlesbrough, Judith D., in 1926 and Anne Errington King, July 19th 1933 in the district of Pockington, East Riding Yorkshire. In 1939 they were living at The Rectory, Pockington, where Reginald was Vicar of Seaton Ross and Rector of Everingham & Harswell.

Dorothy Errington King nee Hodgson died in 1953, the Reverend Reginald L’Ecuyer King (71), May 22nd 1960, Bridlington, East Yorkshire.

Details of their children;

Elizabeth Mary King was married in 1947 in the district of Thirsk, Yorkshire North Riding to Robert Stephenson, born April 7th 1923. He died in Beverley, East Riding Yorkshire in 1999. His death was preceded by that of his wife Elizabeth Mary Stephenson nee King, October 2nd 1994.

John Sadgrove L’Ecuyer King served during WW2 and survived the conflict. He was married in the district of Howden, East Riding Yorkshire in 1951 to Brenda I. M. Dennis. John was still living in 2014.

Judith D. King was married in 1957 in the district of Thirsk, Yorkshire North Riding, to Arthur J. Huby.

Anne Errington King was married in 1965, York, Yorkshire West Riding, to Brian Sutcliffe, who was born, April 29th 1932. Brian died in 2004, Anne Errington Sutcliffe nee King, April 5th 2016, Leeds, Yorkshire.
