The second son of Robert Edmund Eyles and his wife Mildred Vera Everall Caldicott who had married in 1923, Robert Edmund was born in Bristol in March 1926 just after the death of his father in an accident at Bristol Docks where he worked.  There was an older brother Malcolm John (b.1923) and a sister Annie Louisa (b.1924).

During WW2 Robert served in the Royal Navy as P/JX628341 and was stationed at HMS Hornet, the coastal forces base in Gosport that handled Motor Torpedo Boats and Motor Gun Boats.

He reportedly died in a road accident.
