Every Name a Story
On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 2719SD Deck Hand Peter Cowe, serving on H.M. Trawler Achilles II with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 26/06/1918.
The son of Alice Wilson (formerly Cowe), of 9, Robinson Terrace, Sunderland, and the late Alexander Andrew Cowe.

Peter was born in Sunderland on 12th October 1896, the son of Alexander and Alice Cowe. He was living at 9, Robinson Terrace, Sunderland when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve on 10th September 1915. He was described as being 5 feet 3 inches tall with fair hair and blue eyes.
On 26th June 1918 he was killed on board HMT Achilles II off Harwich when it was sunk by a mine explosion.
Peter Cowe is remembered at Sunderland in S140.48 Part 8 page 156 and S140.053 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
