In Newcastle upon Tyne (All Saints) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Sailor Norman Proctor, serving on S.S. Stanburn (London) with the Merchant Navy who died 29/01/1940.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Ann Proctor
Died 15th Dec. 1939, age 65

Also Thomas, her beloved husband
Died 30th Jan. 1940, age 67

Also Norman, their beloved son
Lost at sea 29th Jan. 1940,
Interred here 7th Feb. 1940
Aged 21 years.

Greater love hath no man than this
That a man lay down his life for his friends.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 06/02/1940 reports:-
PROCTOR. —St Anthonys, 101, Kingston Avenue, by enemy action at sea, January 29th, aged 21 years, Norman, dearly beloved son of the late Thomas and Ann Proctor. Interment All Saints’ Cemetery Wednesday, leaving residence 2 o’clock. All friends and neighbours kindly invited to meet Cemetery 2.20. Deeply mourned.
