On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of C/MX 49288 Petty Officer Sick Berth Norman Murton, serving on H.M.S. Dasher with the Royal Navy who died 27/03/1943.

H.M.S. Dasher, was an ex merchant Vessel named ‘Rio de Janeiro’ D37, USN BAVG 5. It was built by Sun Shipbuilding, laid down on 14th March 1940, launched 12th April 1941. It was acquired by USN on 20th May 1941. It was converted at Tietjen & Lang, transferred to the Royal Navy and commissioned into service as HMS Dasher (D37) on 2nd July 1942. The vessel participated in Operation Torch and saw limited service as a convoy escort. She was sunk by an explosion during aircraft refueling in the Firth Of Clyde on the 27th March 1943.

The Scout Roll of Honour 1939-45 states that Norman Murton was aged 29 years when he died, and had been associated with the 20th Gateshead (St. Paul’s) Group.
