On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of First Engineer Matthew Henry Wilson, serving on S.S. Charles Goodanew (Plymouth) with the Mercantile Marine, who died 17/04/1917.
He was the son of the late Matthew and Mary Ann Wilson and the husband of Eva Alice Wilson (nee Greer), of 16, Edward Street, Blyth. He was born at New Hartley.
The Steamer Charles Goodanew, was mined 3.5 miles ENE of Rattray Head and was attacked by the German U Boat UC 45, commanded by Kapitänleutnant Hubert Aust. She was carrying Admirality cargo from Aberdeen to Scapa Flow. Total of 12 casualties.
Matthew Henry Wilson is remembered at Blyth on B42.24, in the Mercantile Marine Roll of Honour 1917 where his initials are shown as W.H. and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
