On the Helles Memorial, Turkey (including Gallipoli) is the name of Tyneside Z/2254 Leading Seaman Michael Dalton, serving with the Hood Battalion, Royal Naval Division Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 14/07/1915.

Michael was born on July 2nd 1891 and was working as a miner living with his parents, Jacob and Bridget at Wansbeck Mill House, Morpeth when he enlisted in the Royal Naval Division on October 19th 1914. He joined the 4th Platoon, ‘D’ Company of the Collingwood Battalion and transferred to the Hood battalion on June 8th 1915. Michael was posted as killed in action in Gallipoli on July 14th 1915.

Michael Dalton was the fourth son of Jacob Dalton and Bridget Dalton. He was born on 2nd July 1891 at Choppington.

In 1901 the family lived at Bedlington but by 1911 had moved to 89 Sycamore Street, Hirst, Ashington. At that time his two older brothers, Patrick and William, had left home but George (23) was still there as were the younger siblings: Robert (18), Jacob junior (15), Mary (13) and James (12). Michael himself was 20 and, like his father and brothers Robert and Jacob, worked in the coal mining industry.

Some time later the family moved to Morpeth where they lived at Wansbeck Mill House and this was where the family lived when they received the news of Michael’s death, although at the time the CWGC were putting their records together the family lived at 8 Corporation Yard, Morpeth.

Two of his brothers, Robert and George also died.
