On Liverpool Naval Memorial is the name of Skipper John William Cowling, serving on H.M. Trawler Evelina with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 14/12/1939.

In Preston Cemetery is a family headstone bearing an inscription on the kerbstone which reads:

Chief Skipper John William Cowling, R.N.R.
Killed in action 14th December 1939 aged 32 years.

He  was the son of  John Cowling and of Christina Cowling (nee Massey) and the husband of Christiana Cowling (nee Newton), of North Shields.

John William Cowling is remembered in our List of Ships’ Crews.
