In Voormezeele Enclosure Cemetery No.3, Belgium is the Commonwealth War Grave of 46405 Sapper Joseph Moffat Peacock, serving with the 56th Field Company, Royal Engineers who died 10/12/1915.

Joseph Moffat Peacock was born on 8th February 1894, at Southwick on Wear, the eldest son of William Thomas Peacock, of Hartlepool, a Driller, and his wife Sarah Carr, daughter of Joseph Moffat, of Monkwearmouth. He was educated at the Southwick and Goole Board Schools, and was employed at Pickersgill’s shipyard.

He resided at 50 St John’s Street, Southwick on Wear, and had enlisted on the 9th September 1914. Joseph trained at Brixton, Henley and Gillingham.

He was killed in action “somewhere in France”, 10th December 1915.

His Chief Officer had written:- A shell came into their dug-out killing four of them instantly. They were buried the day following in Princess Pat’s Cemetery, Voormezeele, when all of the section attended the funeral. He was a splendid brave fellow.
