On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium is the name of 2280 Private John James Bailey, serving with the 1st/7th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry who died 15/05/1915.

John James Bailey was the only son of the late Mr Bailey, born Sunderland, August 1887. On the 24th August 1912 he married Elizabeth Jane Farley who died on the 16th of June 1914. She was the daughter of William Chambers Farley of Sunderland, who was a Machine Driller. They had one child, a daughter called Catherine, born on the 9th January 1913, and were residing at 15 Victoria Street, Southwick, Sunderland.

John was employed at Foster’s Forge, Sunderland and joined the 1/7th (Territorial) Battalion of the Durham Light Infantry at Gateshead.

He volunteered on the outbreak of War and was killed in action “somewhere” in France 15th May 1915.
