In Sunderland (Ryhope) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of M/20555 Engine Room Artificer 2nd Class John Edward Raine, serving on H.M.T.B. Ariel with the Royal Navy who died 25/10/1919.

The son of Thomas and Hannah Mary Raine, of Seaham Harbour and the husband of Catherine Raine, of 11, Ridley Terrace, Sunderland.

The following is provided by Elaine Hope, his great-granddaughter.  Her grandmother was Madge, who loved her father dearly.

John Edward Raine was born in Seaham, in 1876. He married Catherine Graham in Seaham in 1900. They had two daughters; Madge was born May 22nd 1901 and Norah, who was  born in 1908 and died in 1914.

John Edward Raine is remembered at Sunderland in S140.48 Part 8 page 160 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
