On Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 16248 Private James Studham serving with the 9th Battalion, Yorkshire Regiment who died 07/10/1916.

James was born in 1883 at Pelton Fell, Chester le Street the son of William and Mary Jane Studham.

In 1891 the family were living at 7 Dean Street Witton Gilbert and included James (1883) Robert (1885) Joseph (1888) and Esther (1890).

In 1901 they had moved to 424 New Cross Rows Wingate. There was no mention of Esther but Mary A.B. (1893) and Dinah (1896) completed the family.

In 1911 Mary Jane, by then a widow was living at 1 East Terrace, Station Town with Joseph, Mary, Dinah and two lodgers. James (Studholm) was a boarder at Brooklyn Street Murton, working as a Coal Miner – Hewer.

James married Hannah Hind 19th November 1905 and they had four known children Esther (1907, Walker), William (1908 Station Town) Gerge Thomas (1910 Walker) and Elizabeth Jane (1912 Hesleden)

In October 1914 James of 5 Armstrong Street, Hesleden, enlisted into the Durham Light Infantry at West Hartlepool. He was discharged with Flat Feet two weeks later. However he later enlisted into the Yorkshire Regiment at Sunderland. James embarked for the Balkans 28th September 1915. He was killed in action 7th October 1916 and has no known grave. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial.
