On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of P/J 102187 Able Seaman John Sherrick, serving on H.M. Submarine Sterlet with the Royal Navy who died 27/04/1940.

In Newcastle upon Tyne (St. Nicholas) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of
my dear husband
John Sherrick
lost at sea on Submarine Sterlet
April 30th 1940 aged 36 years

Also Lydia Chapman
beloved wife of the above
died Oct. 8th 1962 aged 53 years

Also John son of the above
accidentally killed Aug. 24th 1936
aged 23 years.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 03/05/1940 reports with a photograph:-
GATESHEAD MAN IN LOST SUBMARINE
One of the crew of the submarine Sterlet, which is presumed lost, is John Sherrick (36) one of three sons of the late Mr. Gavin Sherrick and Mrs. C. Sherrick, of Hylton Street, Gateshead. Mr. Sherrick went to live at Portsmouth eight years ago, after his marriage to Miss Lydia Ferry, of Cooper Street. Gateshead. He worked at Felling Colliery before joining the Navy 19 years ago. He has John Sherrick a son aged seven. His mother, who had previously been informed by letter from his wife that she was to undergo an operation this week, has received a telegram from her stating she said she had been informed by the Admiralty of the feared loss of her husband.
