Every Name a Story

On the Thiepval Memorial, Somme France is the name of 21/335 Private James Pendrick serving with the 21st (Tyneside Scottish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

Derek Johnstone has provided the following:

James Pendrick was born at Newcastle upon Tyne about 1898. His parents were George Pendrick from Newcastle and Annie Pendrick from Netherton, a village near Bedlington in Northumberland.

Records of the Pendrick family in 1901 were not located but, in the 1911 Census, they were living at Bryson Street, Guide Post, Northumberland, when James was 12 and a scholar. His parents at this time had been married for 13 years. James’ fathers occupation is shown as a field drainer and siblings included Margaret 9 and George aged 6.

Military records show James enlisted at Bedlington and confirms he was born at Newcastle. On his death his effects went to his mother Annie, indicating he was not married. Additionally, James’ Pension Index Card only shows his mother Annie. It should be noted there are variations of his surname in the various records.

James Pendrich is remembered in Choppington on C36.01 and C36.02
