In Dover (St. James’s) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of P/JX 289929 Able Seaman Jack Long serving on H.M.S. President III with the Royal Navy who died 28/06/1944.

The son of Walter and Caroline Elizabeth Long and the husband of Elizabeth Long, of Chester le Street, Co. Durham.

In Ropery Lane Cemetery is a family headstone H19 which reads:-

Treasured memories of our dear parents WALTER ROBERT LONG died 30th June 1928 aged 65 years
CAROLINE ELIZABETH LONG died 2nd May 1938 aged 73 years
JACK LONG their dear son Killed in Action at Dover 28th June 1944 aged 38 years
WALTER WILLIAM LONG died 17th November 1968 aged 72 years

Loved and remembered

H.M.S. ‘President III’ was an Accounting Base, a resurrection of a World War I name. It started its new life at Bristol in 1939 and in due course had offices at Windsor and London too. It was responsible for drafting, paying and otherwise looking after men who served on DEMS – Defensively Equipped Merchant Ships. These ships were fitted with whatever guns might be available and suitable, primarily for defence against air attack but also to counter submarine surface and other surface vessel attack. Gun crews were supplied by the Royal Navy (or in some cases by Maritime Artillery Regiments of the Royal Artillery).
