In  Heworth (St. Mary) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave, with a private headstone of  PO/X100325 Marine James Lawlor serving on H.M.S. Hawkins with the Royal Marines  who died 22/05/1942.

The husband of Norma Lawlor, of Felling,  Gateshead.

The headstone reads:

Pray
for the repose of the soul of
our dear son
James Lawlor R.M.
died 22nd May 1942, aged 22 years.

Also father of the above
James Lawlor
died 31st  Oct. 1963, aged 64 years.

Also mother of the above
Edith Lawlor
died 23rd April 1970, aged 68 years.

Heslop’s Local Advertiser 15/05/1946 carries an In Memoriam notice:
Lawlor – Felling, James, Royal Marines, died May 22nd 1942 on active service.
