John George Wardle was born on the 25th March 1921 at 156 Edward Street, South Shields, Co Durham the second youngest child of six children to father Robert Wardle, born 1881, died 20th November 1945, and his wife Mary Ellen Wardle nee Cooper, born 1887, died 1932. They were married in 1908.

The other children were:
Rhoda Wardle, born 1909.
Robert William Wardle, born 1911.
Ellen William Wardle, born 1916.
Christina Wardle, born 1918.
Walter Wardle, born 25th March 1921.

In 1921, the father was a Coal Trimmer at Tyne Dock for the North Eastern Railway.
The family resided at 156 Edward Street, South Shields. Walter was a rivet catcher.

Although buried within the area of the cemetery set aside for Commonwealth War dead, his death was not directly related to his service.
