In Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave, with a private headstone,  of Master James Fox Williams serving on S.S. Heworth with the Merchant Navy  who died 16/07/1940.

 He was the son of Richard and Mary Williams, of Sunderland and the husband of Margaret Ann Nesham Williams (nee Ditchburn), of Sunderland.

The headstone, in the form of a rectangular pillar, reads:

Master Mariner,
beloved husband of
Margaret A.N.
Williams,
killed in action
July 16th 1940
aged 69 years.

Also the above
Margaret Ann
Neasham Williams
who died March 30th 1962,
aged 89 years.

Also their eldest son
James Fox Williams
who died  May 9th 1967
aged 73 years.

SS Heworth was a British cargo steamer , part of Convoy FN 223,  that was bombed and sunk in the North Sea 10 miles south of Aldeburgh, Suffolk when on route from London to Sunderland in ballast. Crew of four lost. See also Samuel Goodwin Thompson (Ryton).
