On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of Engineer Lieutenant John Brown, serving on H.M.S. Stephen Furness with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 13/12/1917.
The son of John and Ann Brown, of South Shields and the husband of Mary Brown, of 68, Simonside Terrace, Heaton, Newcastle upon Tyne.

Memorial Window unveiled at St. Barnabas
At the evening service in St. Barnabas Church, Newcastle, yesterday, a memorial window was unveiled by Major. E.C. Burnup, R.E., in memory of Engineer-Lieut. John Brown, R.N.R. and his son, Private John Brown, late of the 15th Royal Scot.
During his sermon, the Vicar, Rev. Alfred Thomas, made reference to the loss sustained by the Parish. Engineer Lieut. Brown, who had lost his life in H.M.S. Stephen Furness, was, he said, a worthy son of a a worthy sire, a faithful husband and a fond father.
The younger member of the church had grown into a splendid fellow, and particularly his association with the Sunday School, Boys Brigade, and Band of Hope, were remembered. He had been a pride to his mother, and a magnificent means of support. He felt deep condolence with Mrs. Brown and the father and relatives of the late members. He urged his congregation to buckle on fresh armour in the warfare of God: the rebuilding of a new world under the great Master-Builder, Christ; to make a better country and repair the breaking hearts, blasted lives and scattered homes.
John the son died October 22nd 1917 and the father died December 13th 1917.
