Boiston, Windy Nook, Joseph, D.S.M., R.N., died May 21st 1947.

Just for your notes for North East War Memorials Project re Joseph Boiston of Windy Nook, died 1947. He was my partner’s 4th cousin, born August 2nd 1915, son of Charles Johnston Boiston and Annie Lynch. He won the DSM for his part in sinking a U-boat while serving on H.M.S. Fearless in 1940. He did not marry or leave any children. However he was one of 10 children so there are probably plenty of nephews and nieces around.

The Newcastle Chronicle 24/08/1940 reports:-
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Boiston, of Hopper Road, Windy Nook, have received word that their son, Able Seaman Joseph Boiston, has been awarded the D.S.M. for bravery in the destruction of a German submarine. Boiston, who is 26, has been in the Navy for 10 years. His brother is in the Navy, and his father, who is also a seaman, was at Antwerp when war was declared but managed to get home with his ship.

He is not on the CWGC lists.
