In Cresswell (St. Bartholomew) Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Lieutenant John Baker-Cresswell serving on H.M.S. Excellent with the Royal Navy who died 16/10/1920.

The family headstone reads:

Died 7th September 1921 aged 46.

And his son
John Baker-Cresswell
Drowned 16th October 1920 aged 20.

“Christ absolve them, God receive them.”

Double Funeral Ceremony
The internment took place on Wednesday in the beautiful little churchyard at Cresswell, of Major Addison Francis Baker-Cresswell (late 60th Rifles) of Cresswell and Harehope Hall, Alnwick who died in London, from the effects of an illness contracted in France during the war, and also of his eldest son, Lieut. John Baker-Cresswell, R.N. who was drowned in the execution of his duty only 11 months ago and was temporarily interred in London.

H.M.S. Excellent was and is a “stone frigate” a shore establishment for training at Portsmouth.
