On Portsmouth Naval Memorial is the name of Lieutenant Ian Brack Souter, serving on H.M.S. Hereward with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 29/05/1941.

He was the son of Sir William Alfred Souter, R.E., and Lady Souter, of Gosforth, Northumberland.

The Scotsman 06/03/1942 reports:-
SOUTEK . —Previously reported missing in H.M.S. Hereward , sunk off Crete, May 1941, now officially presumed to have lost his life , Acting Lieutenant Ian Brack Souter, R.N.V.R., much beloved second son of Mr and Mrs W.A. Souter, of “Dursley” Gosforth, Newcastle on Tyne. ( No letters , please)
