Herbert Henry Quincey, son of Henry and Isabella Mary (nee Dobson) Quincey, was christened on 27th September 1882 at St Paul’s Church, Darlington, although his birth was registered in the last quarter of 1882.
In 1891 he was living with his parents and four siblings in the village of Newbeggin near Richmond. Ten years later 20 year old Henry was lodging on Pease Street in Hartlepool and working as a tram conductor.
On 14th May 1902 he married Ada Mary Crawford in Hartlepool where their first child, Alice Maud was born the same year. Moving to live in Darlington, where Herbert worked as a horse cab driver, they had three more children, Arthur (b.1903), Herbert Henry (b.1905) and Edward George (b.1907). Ada died at the end of 1908 in Darlington.
By 1911 widower Henry, along with his four children, and his youngest brother Laurence, were living at 5 Robinsons Yard, Tubwell Row, Darlington.
In 1912 Henry fathered a child, Ada, with his sister-in-law Minnie Crawford, whom he married on 20th November 1915 and they went on to have three sons, Richard (b.1916), Albert (b.1918) and John (b.1920).
Henry enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry in Darlington on 11th December 1915. Mobilised the following July he became Private 5388 (later renumbered to 200659) with the 5th Battalion and entered France with them as part of the BEF on 4th December 1916.
Posted as missing, Henry was a Prisoner of War in Germany from 11th April 1918 and returned to England on 20th November 1918. He was demobilised on 3rd March 1919.
Herbert Henry Quincey died at home on 18th April 1921, it was not considered that his early death was caused by his wartime service.
