He was the husband of W. E. Groves (formerly Wardle), of 2, Milton Place, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Berks.

George was the son of William Wardle 1861 of Blyth, Northumberland and his wife Mary Kelly, native of Felling, Gateshead born 1862. His parents were married in the district of Gateshead, during the first quarter of 1887. His family lived at 78 Waggonway Street, Heworth in 1891, by 1911 they had moved to 51 Back High Street, Felling. George aged 22 was a Coal Miner Hewer.

George enlisted into the Northumberland Fusiliers as Private 204581 and was in the 4th Reserve Battalion when he died.

George died at Derby of  pneumonia. His wife Winifred B. was living at Eggington Hall Hospital near Derby.

His brother Thomas is buried beside him at Heworth.

George Wardle is remembered at Heworth on H92.04 and H92.07.
