Every Name a Story
On the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France is the name of 24301 Private Gilbert Graham, serving with the 25th (Tyneside Irish) Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.
He was the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Graham of Sipton Shield, Sparty Lea, Allendale.
Peggy Mbarek has sent in an undated newspaper cutting, probably the Hexham Courant 29/11/1919. It reads:
Unveiling of a memorial tablet.
The unveiling of a memorial tablet to the late Pte. Gilbert Graham, of Sinderhope, took place at Sparty Lea Primitive Methodist Chapel, on Saturday night. A large congregation of people filled both the chapel and Sunday School. Rev. W. Armstrong presided, and after offering prayer and reading a short passage of scripture, called upon Mr. Wm. U. Bright to unveil the tablet. In his remarks, Mr. Bright said he undertook the duty with mixed feelings of pride and regret. We all rejoiced that the great war cloud had passed away. There was a time when we wondered if it would ever pass from us, and what the end of it would be. A mighty victory had been won, the war cloud had passed, but it had left a shadow in the shape of our loss, the brave dead who have fallen in the battle. Our victorious armies are returning, and our welcome to them is tinged with regret regarding those who do not come back.
Gilbert Graham is remembered at Allenheads on A7.01, A7.02 and A7.03.
