On Tower Hill Memorial, Trinity Square, London is the name of Master George Gauntlett Gains serving on S.S. Clearfield with the Mercantile Marine  who died 23/10/1916.

George Gauntlett Gaine, son of James S. Gaine, husband of Mary Burnett nee Gibb, was born in Bombay in 1865. His father was also a Mariner.

In 1881, George was indentured as an apprentice at Middlesbrough for 3 years. The family were living in South View Terrace, South Shields, in 1885 when George passed his first Seaman’s ticket. 

In 1890, he married at Corbridge, Northumberland. They had six children, five boys and one girl. Two of the sons emigrated to Canada and served in the Canadian Forces. One of his sons died in WWII  in 1940. 

They were living in South Shields when the children were born, but later moved to Burnham Grove sometime between 1902 and 1906. George is away at sea on the 1911 census, master of the S.S. Minorca. 

George died on or about the 23rd October 1916 when his ship S.S. Clearfield was sunk in the Atlantic Ocean off the Flannan Isles by SM U-55 Imperial German Navy with the loss of all 32 crew. He left effects worth £1523  6 shillings. 

George Gauntlett Gaine is remembered at East Boldon on E46.01, at West Boldon on W99.02 and W99.06 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
