In St. Aidan’s Roman Catholic Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of J/79275 Ordinary Seaman George Binns, serving on H.M.S. Satellite with the Royal Navy who died 15/03/1918.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
George Binns
Ordy. Seaman
H.M.S. Stronsay
who was accidentally
drowned while serving
in H.M. Navy
March 11th 1918 age 18
(The rest is eroded)

He was born at Ashington (CWGC).

Margaret Allison states that in 1911 his address was 1 Brunel Street, Gateshead.

George Binns is remembered at Ashington on A17.28 and A17.43 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
