Billy McGee tells us in 2026:-

Cargo ship Fireglow, 1,261grt, (Gas Light & Coke Co.) sailed in ballast from London bound for the Tyne in the 56 ship Convoy FN-572, which departed Southend on the 7th December 1941. The following day about 23 nautical miles North, North-West of Cromer the ship detonated a mine between number three and four cargo holds killing one crewmember and sank within twenty minutes position 53’ 18N 01’ 05E.

One of the ships Able Seamen, George Alexandra Frame who was later awarded the British Empire Medal carried a wounded man on his back to a boat and, with help, lowered him to safety. He then returned to succour another member of the crew. One boat with fourteen survivors in was successfully launched, though five men were forced to jump overboard as the ship began her final descent.

As the ship was going down the ships Master, David Archibald Gibbins, who would receive a Kings Commendation, suddenly appeared from the shattered wheelhouse and was saved by the men in the lifeboat and those in the boat and those who had jumped overboard were rescued a short time later by the Destroyer HMS Verdun and landed at Grimsby.

George Frame died in 1944 and his death was attributed to the loss of the Fireglow in 1941, so he was granted full war grave status.
