On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of C/KX 136787 Stoker 2nd Class Frederick Henry Mann, serving on H.M.S. Curacoa with the Royal Navy who died 02/10/1942.

He was the son of James and Ada Mann, of Ashington

Frederick Henry Mann was born on the 6th January 1923 at Ashington, Northumberland, to parents James Mann and Ada Birks.

In 1939 they family were living at 42 Fourth Row, Ashington, James, Frederick’s father, was working as a Platelayer at a local Colliery.

Frederick joined the Royal Navy, being allotted the service number C/KX 136787 and served aboard H.M.S. Curacoa.

Stoker 1st Class Mann died on the 2nd October 1942, when the ship he was aboard sunk after clashing with R.M.S. Queen Mary, he was aged 19. Frederick is remembered on the Chatham Naval Memorial.

The Newcastle Journal 14/11/1942 reports:-
LOST AT SEA
Stoker (1st Class) Frederick Henry Mann, R.N., 42, Fourth Row, Ashlngton.

His pal, Robert Goldsbury died when he was shot down over Germany in 1945.
