The Hartlepool Northern Daily Mail 23/05/1941 reports:-
“SUICIDE” VERDICT
Grimsby Seaman’s Body in Dock
A verdict of “Suicide by drowning” was returned at the resumed inquest at West Hartlepool last night on Francis Duffy (33), a seaman, of Grimsby, whose body was recovered from a dock on May 17. At the previous hearing it was stated that Duffy was given shore leave on Saturday, April 12, and was due back on board his chip at midnight. He did not return, and his overcoat, cap, and respirator were found lying at the side of the dock.

The deputy Coroner, Mr. H. Ley Wilson, pointed out last night that the man would have to negotiate a fence in order to reach the edge of the dock where his hat, overcoat, and respirator were found. If he had slipped in, one would presume that these things would have gone with him but seeing he had left them at the side, he could only draw the conclusion that Duffy intended putting himself in the water.

Francis Duffy is remembered at Hartlepool on H115.09 and H115.16, at West Hartlepool on W111.055, in 1939-1945 Military and Civilian names beginning with D and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
