On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Fireman and Trimmer Francis Devitt Atkinson serving on S.S. Harpalyce with the Merchant Navy who died 25/08/1940.

The son of John William and Mary Elizabeth Atkinson, of Sunderland, Co. Durham.

In Sunderland (Ryhope Road) Cemetery is a headstone which reads:

Love’s tribute
to a dear husband & father
John William Atkinson
died  18th January 1968
aged  86 years.

Also Mary Elizabeth
his dearly loved wife
died 31st March 1974
aged 81 years.

Also Francis Devitt
son of the above
lost at sea 25th August 1940
aged 26 years.

“Lord hear my prayer
and let my cry come unto thee”.

Francis Devitt Atkinson is remembered at Sunderland on S140.159 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
