On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of 1941EA Engine Room Artificer Ernest Temperley Baty serving on H.M.S. Clan McNaughton with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 03/02/1915.

The son of William and Dorothy Baty, of 16, Tynedale Terrace, Hexham, Northumberland.

Ernest was born on 21st October 1887 in Hexham to William Baty, a grocer and pawnbroker and his wife Dorothy. 1891 the family were living at 14, Alexandria Terrace, Hexham.

In 1901 Ernest was living with his mother, two sisters and one brother at 16, Tynedale Terrace, Hexham. His father William had died on 10th January 1901.

By the time of the 1911 Census Ernest was lodging with the Allan family at 76, Dene View, Wallsend when he was working as a marine engineer at North East Marine Engineering Company Limited.

Ernest enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve on 12th November 1914. He was described as being 5ft 7½ inches tall with brown eyes and a fresh complexion. He was posted to H.M.S. Pembroke and after a short spell of training was posted to HMS Clan MacNaughton as an E.R.A.

Ernest was lost on 3rd February 1915 when HMS Clan MacNaughton was presumed to have foundered off the north west coast of Scotland. His service amounted to a total of 10 weeks.
