On Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon is the name of J/20643 (Dev), Able Seaman Ernest Houghland, serving on H.M.S. Indefatigable with the Royal Navy who died 31/05/1916.

Ernest Houghland was born on the 11th December 1896 in Sheffield, the son of Ernest and Florence Houghland, {nee Rowen]. Siblings were Willie, Percy and Edith Houghland.

He was an old boy from the Wellesley Training Ship, leaving on the 16th October 1912.

Ernest was killed at the Battle of Jutland on the HMS Indefatigable.
