On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of Lieutenant Collingwood Watchman, serving on H.M. Drifter Gavinwood with the Royal Naval Reserve who died 20/02/1916.

The son of Collingwood and Lizzie Watchman, of 24, Bartram Gardens, Gateshead on Tyne.

The Illustrated Chronicle 24/02/1916, page 16 reports:
Bensham Naval Lieutenant’s Death.
Acting Lieut. Collingwood Watchman, R.N.R. of Bensham, has been killed as the result of a vessel in which he was serving striking a mine.

Lieut. Watchman served his apprenticeship with the Prince Line Ltd., of Newcastle and was aboard their vessel the Norse Prince, which was destroyed by fire at sea in January 1910, on a voyage from New York to the Cape. He, along with other members of the ship, landed at Ascension Island. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve in March last as sub-lieutenant, and was promoted acting-lieutenant in November.

Collingwood Watchman is remembered at Bensham on B134.07 and B134.08, at Gateshead in G39.004 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
