Every Name a Story
On Chatham Naval Memorial is the name of C/TD/X 1603 Able Seaman Benjamin Bowlt, serving on H.M. Submarine Unique with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve who died 23/10/1942.
The son of Robert and Rosanna Bowlt and the husband of Jane Bowlt, of Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Newcastle Evening Chronicle 08/12/1942 reports:-
BOWLT 19 Graham Street Lost sea on H.M Submarine Unique. Nov. 1942, L.S. Benny Bowlt the dearest husband of Jean (Richardson) and youngest son of Rosanna and the late Robert Bowlt, 123, Goldspink Lane, also his dearest brother-in-law, George Short A.B. killed by enemy action on HMS Avenger. Nov. 1942.
Without farewell they fell asleep
With only a memory left to keep.
Always in the thoughts of his loving wife and little son Bobby, and all who knew him
Benjamin Bowlt is remembered at Gateshead in G39.103, at Newcastle in NUT255 page 15 and in our List of Ships’ Crews.
