Arthur was born in North Shields on 1st August 1884 to Robert and Annie Patterson. When he enlisted in the Royal Naval Reserve on 20th April 1915 he was living at 5, Trinity Terrace, North Shields and he was described as being 5 feet 5¼ inches tall with a fair complexion and light blue eyes.

Arthur died suddenly on board H.M.S. “Satellite”, the drillship at North Shields on 1st November 1916 while he was a crew member of His Majesties Drifter Agnes and Janet. The cause of death was given as “Syphilis and Gonorrhoeal Rheumatism and Pulmonary Entolic”.

When the last payment of £18 5 shillings was paid from the Naval Prize Fund on 5th January 1923 it was forwarded to his brother, Robert living at 44 Penman Street, North Shields.
